Prayer Station 4
(Part 1)
Fight Fear and Anxiety
What shall we do in the midst of this pandemic storm? Look up! PRAY! And don’t just pray. Take this time to create an intentional prayer time in which you truly visit with God. It is important to fight fear and anxiety.
Fight Fear
What are your fears? We all have fears. Some people fear heights, bridges, and public speaking. The list is endless. During this pandemic storm how many of us become anxious at merely walking into a grocery store. Imagine the anxiety that health care heroes must feel as they walk into a hospital or emergency room to take care of others. This is truly a frightening time, but wherever we go we must hold on to the sacred wisdom of the Bible to calm us:
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” 2 Timothy 1: 7
Note that the above scripture warns us not to have a spirit of fear, yet it includes having a “sound mind.” I take that to mean that in these uncertain times we should certainly heed the warnings and suggestions of our leaders and health care experts, but also… “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” – Proverbs 3: 5-6
The Bible includes so many reassuring verses that teach us to trust God and not be paralyzed by fear. Following are just a few to help us realize we have “power and love” through our Lord, Jesus Christ.
“Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.” Isaiah 43: 1b
“When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy.” – Psalms 94: 19
Other scriptures to combat fear: Joshua 1: 9; Isaiah 43:1; Psalms 23: 4; Psalms 34: 4; Romans 8: 38-39; Psalms 27: 1; John 14: 1; Luke 12: 22
Care for Yourself
Experts advise us to fight fear and anxiety by getting regular exercise, eating healthy, resting, and maintaining a routine schedule. Faithful Christians understand that regular prayer and scripture reading is also calming. Check it out. It’s biblical!
Take care of yourself…
a) through exercise and healthy eating.
“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.” – Romans 12: 1
“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.” - 1 Corinthians 6: 19-20
“So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” – 1 Corinthians 10: 31
As I’ve grown older, I’ve become keenly aware that regular exercise is important to keep my body functioning properly; something the “Proverbs 31 Woman” always knew. Remember her? She is that amazing woman from the Bible that exists as a stellar example for us all. Her work ethic is second to none. (To learn more about her, read Proverbs 31: 10-31.) She keeps her body strong for peak performance. We are God’s instruments and workmanship. We must care for our bodies to do His work in this world. The Bible says:
“She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks.” – Proverbs 31: 17
b)by getting plenty of rest.
Getting proper rest is essential to sustain life and thwart illness. And it’s biblical! In Mark, Jesus encouraged His disciples to get rest.
“Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, ‘Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.’” – Mark 6: 31
Sometimes we have those sleepless nights, especially during stressful times. For those times, find solace in the Lord, by reciting the following verse from Psalms. Then begin to pray for our church and for your family and friends. Pray for others by name. List all of your family members and church family members that you can recall. It is a little like counting sheep.
“In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.” -Psalms 4: 8
Sometimes we work too much. Build time in your schedule for a regular time to rest each day and each week, if at all possible. If you work too much, remember that God rested a day and instructed us to do the same. These two scriptures not only point to rest, but to maintaining routine in our lives.
“By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.” – Genesis 2: 2-3
“Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns.” – Exodus 20: 8-10

(Part 2)
Fight Fear and Anxiety
What shall we do in the midst of this pandemic storm? Look up! PRAY! And don’t just pray. Take this time to create an intentional prayer time in which you truly visit with God. It is important to fight fear and anxiety.
Fight Fear
What are your fears? We all have them. Some of us fear heights, bridges, and public speaking. The list goes on and on. During this pandemic storm how many of us become anxious at merely walking into a grocery store. I can’t imagine the anxiety that health care heroes must feel as they walk into a hospital or emergency room to take care of others. This is a frightening time, but wherever we go we must hold on to the sacred wisdom of the Bible to calm us:
Maintain Normalcy with a Routine/Schedule
After weeks in isolation now it is time to think in terms routine. Is your isolation routine working? If not revise it. Even though we are still quarantined maintaining a routine in this new normal is essential for peace of mind. All day grazing and constant binge watching are not good ideas. One Facebook member suggests trying on our jeans periodically to make sure they still fit. Remember it takes 21 days to create a habit. And, we’re there. But more seriously, incorporate prayer and worship as part of your routine. It changes the world. Think about this quote: “Being the change, changes the being.” Prayer also changes our being. So pray.
Pray
Daniel Threlfall said, “There are all kinds of ways to effect change in our world. There are millions of means for spreading the gospel…But all of these efforts come back to one crucial activity- prayer.” Prayer should have always been part of our routine as Christians. (Remember at 8:00 p. m. to turn on your porchlight and pray. It only takes 5-10 minutes.) I am still working on that too. Those of us with grown children realize how nice it is for them to call, even when they don’t need something. God feels that way, too. It is also biblical.
“Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before.” –Daniel 6: 10
The following verses show Jesus routinely praying alone:
“But Jesus Himself would often slip away to the wilderness and pray. “ – Luke 5: 16
“In the early morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house, and went away to a secluded place, and was praying there.” - Mark 1: 35
[Also, see: Matthew 14: 23; Matthew 26: 36, 39; Luke 9: 18. You may Google others.]
Study Scripture
There are so many reasons to study scripture. Of most importance now is the comfort God’s word to brings to us.
“Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.” – Joshua 1: 8
“… from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God[a] may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” – 2 Timothy 3: 15b-17
[Also see: Psalms 119: 11, 105; 2 Timothy 2: 15]
Worship
Though we cannot gather in worship at this time, we can still worship God. CMBC is live-streaming Sunday morning services on Facebook. Other pastors are also having service online. Get creative in worship with your family. Make worship a part of your new routine as you isolate. That, too, is biblical!
Part of the 10 Commandments: “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.” –Exodus 20: 8-11
“As was his custom, Paul went into the synagogue, and on three Sabbath days he reasoned with them from the Scriptures,” – Acts 17: 2
“He (Jesus) went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read,” – Luke 4: 16
Tithe
Continue to routinely tithe; also biblical.
“Bring the best of the first-fruits of your soil to the house of the Lord your God.” – Exodus 23: 19
“ When you have entered the land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance and have taken possession of it and settled in it, take some of the firstfruits of all that you produce from the soil of the land the Lord your God is giving you and put them in a basket. Then go to the place the Lord your God will choose as a dwelling for his Name 3 and say to the priest in office at the time, ‘I declare today to the Lord your God that I have come to the land the Lord swore to our ancestors to give us.’ The priest shall take the basket from your hands and set it down in front of the altar of the Lord your God.” Deuteronomy 26: 1-4
Set up a workable routine for yourself. (Confession: I’m still working on this.) Routinely take care of yourself by exercising, eating right, and resting, for you are God’s temple. Routinely pray, worship, and tithe as your time and income allows. Call and check on a friend, neighbor, relative, or church member.
If this all seems daunting, remember you are not in this alone. Others love you and are in this with you, even if they are not physical present. And most importantly, God/Christ/Holy Spirit is with you always.
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” – Joshua 1: 9
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 4: 6-7
“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” – Matthew 28: 19-20
“I can do all this through Christ who gives me strength.” – Philippians 4: 13
